How To Get A Tennessee Sales Tax Number

Sales tax is a tax imposed on the sale of goods and services. The tax is calculated as a percentage of the selling price of the goods or services. In most states, the sales tax is imposed on both the buyer and the seller. In some states, the tax is imposed on the seller only.

In Tennessee, the sales tax is imposed on the seller only. The tax rate is 7% of the selling price of the goods or services.

To obtain a sales tax number, you must first register with the Tennessee Department of Revenue. You can register online, by mail, or in person.

Once you have registered, you will be issued a sales tax number. This number must be included on all sales tax returns that you file.

If you are a business that sells goods or services, you must collect the sales tax from your customers and remit it to the Department of Revenue.

If you are a business that does not collect sales tax from your customers, you must pay the tax yourself.

The due date for filing sales tax returns and remitting the tax to the Department of Revenue is the 20th day of the month following the end of the reporting period.

Reporting periods are as follows:

January 1 ' March 31

April 1 ' June 30

July 1 ' September 30

October 1 â'December 31

If the 20th day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, the due date is the next business day.

Returns and payments must be postmarked by the due date to be considered timely.

Late returns and payments are subject to a late filing penalty of 5% of the tax due, plus interest at the rate of 1% per month.
